If Not Fish - What's In New Harvest™?
New Harvest™ is made from a type of yeast called Yarrowia lipolytica (Ya-row-WEE-ah • lip-o-LIE-tick-ah), an organism approved by FDA for the production of food-grade citric acid. The process of cultivating this yeast to make New Harvest™ is similar to, but much more scientifically advanced than, the fermentation of yeast carried out in beer production.
How does a yeast make Omega-3s?
New Harvest™ has combined the natural ability of Yarrowia lipolytica to transform corn sugar into oils with a new capability to transform these oils into the desired long-chain Omega-3 EPA. With the power of modern biology, New Harvest™ has created a new fish-free source of this important nutrient.
Step One: Yeast Selection
Through modifications and selection, the right strain of Yarrowia lipolytica is identified.
Step Two: Fermentation
The yeast is grown in stainless steel tanks in a food-quality facility using a process similar to brewing beer. The major ingredient is corn sugar along with some other nutrients. This fermentation produces a mixture rich in Omega-3-abundant yeast
Step Three: Separation
The yeast containing the Omega-3 is separated from the mixture using centrifuges and filters.
Step Four: Extraction
The Omega-3-rich oil is then extracted from the yeast in a process similar to that used to extract vegetable oils like soybean oil.
Step Five: Purification
The final step is purification to produce Omega-3 oil for New Harvest™. This final oil is tested according to the protocols of the American Oil Chemists’ Society and the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, and exceeds all standards of freshness set by the Council for Responsible Nutrition and the World Health Organization.
