It’s important to recognize that not all Omega-3 fatty acids are the same. In fact, Omega-3s are actually a family of several fatty acids, which are vital for our bodies to work. The three types of Omega-3 fatty acids are:
- Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)
EPA is a long-chain fatty acid that is found primarily in cold-water, fatty fish like salmon, cod, mackerel, and tuna, as well as in fresh seaweed. Also can be found in Omega-3 fatty acid supplement ingredients like fish oil or New Harvest™. - Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)
DHA is also a long-chain fatty acid that can be found in fish and fish oil supplements. - Alpha-Linoleic Acid (ALA)
ALA is a short-chain fatty acid found in plant sources like dark green leafy vegetables, flaxseeds, walnuts, and a variety of vegetable oils. Converts to EPA in the body, although quite inefficiently (about 5%).
A Good Fat
EPA is recognized to support the heart health nutritional benefits most commonly associated with long-chain Omega-3s. In fact, referring to it as one of the “good fats” (vs saturated or trans fats), the American Heart Association suggests healthy individuals consume approximately 500 mg of EPA and DHA per day.
In addition to the EPA benefits above, the EPA in New Harvest™ also helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels in the body. Furthermore, EPA has also been shown to help support emotional well-being.
